TOEFL iBT Test Structure (as of 2025):

  1. Reading (35 minutes):
    • Consists of 2 reading passages, each approximately 700 words, totaling 20 questions.
    • Time per question: Approximately 1.75 minutes.
  2. Listening (36 minutes):
    • Includes 3 lectures (each 3-5 minutes) with 6 questions each, and 2 conversations (each 3 minutes) with 5 questions each.
    • No unscored questions.
    • Time per question: Approximately 0.64 minutes.
  3. Speaking (16 minutes):
    • Comprises 4 tasks:
      • 1 Independent Speaking Task.
      • 3 Integrated Speaking Tasks (involving reading and listening components).
    • Time per task: Approximately 4 minutes.
  4. Writing (29 minutes):
    • Includes 2 tasks:
      • Integrated Writing Task (20 minutes): Read a passage, listen to a recording, and type your response.
      • Academic Discussion Task (10 minutes): Engage in a discussion based on provided materials.
    • Time per task: 20 minutes for the first and 10 minutes for the second.

Total Test Duration: Approximately 2 hours (116 minutes).



Key Changes Implemented in July 2023:

  • Shortened Test Duration: The overall test time was reduced from over 3 hours to just under 2 hours, making it more efficient for test-takers.
  • Revised Sections:
    • Reading: Reduced to 2 passages, each with 10 questions.
    • Listening: Adjusted to include specific numbers of lectures and conversations with corresponding questions.
    • Speaking: Modified to 4 tasks, focusing on integrated skills.
    • Writing: Changed to 2 tasks, emphasizing integrated writing and academic discussion.
  • No Unscored Questions: The previous inclusion of unscored questions in the Listening section has been removed, streamlining the test experience.

Preparation Recommendations:

  • Familiarize with the New Format: Understand the updated structure and timing of each section to manage your time effectively during the test.
  • Practice with Updated Materials: Utilize preparation materials that reflect the current test format to ensure your practice aligns with the actual exam.
